VOLUNTEERS

The Centre currently has 22 volunteers who work shifts of 2½ hours in winter and 3 hours in summer. The number of shifts worked is entirely up to the individual volunteer, some offering their time twice a week while others can only manage once a month. Skills are varied and tasks are allocated in accordance with an individual volunteers abilities and wishes. Volunteers work in a range of capacities, including cleaning the centre, working on the information desk, maintaining stock, record keeping, preparing & producing information leaflets, teaching basic computing etc. The total number of volunteer hours is in excess of 2250 per year.

TRAINING

Volunteers are given an initial induction. After this they normally work in pairs, one experienced person with one newer person although some prefer to work alone. The Co-ordinator is usually on duty to deal with any problems.

In house computer familiarisation courses are available to any volunteer wishing to improve their skills and outside organisations such as Job Search and Credit Union run training sessions in their own fields from time to time.

The Centre has been fortunate in obtaining funding for further training from the Brecon Beacons National Park Sustainability Fund. This enables volunteers to attend courses such as computer training at Powys Training and many have gained proficiency certificates in various applications. It also funds familiarisation trips to various places of interest so that visitors can be given first hand knowledge of the attractions they wish to see. The visits also enable the Centre to produce information leaflets for people holidaying in the area.

Several volunteers have gone on to full time employment as a result of their time with the Centre.
